This year marks 20 years since The Verve's seminal album Urban Hymns and tomorrow an anniversary edition of the album comes out.
It was their third album and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and is one of the 20 biggest selling albums ever in the UK. The CD and vinyl box set comes with a remastered version of the album, all of the accompanying b-sides, previously unreleased live material including their 1998 Haigh Hall, Wigan hometown show in full and the DVD includes The Video 96-98 documentary plus plenty of unseen footage of their 94 tour in the US. Below hear what happened when I had guitarist Nick McCabe and bassist Simon Jones in the studio at BBC 6 Music to discuss the making of Urban Hymns, the whirlwind after it came out, their memories of 1997 and whether they’ve been in touch with Richard Ashcroft during this nostalgic time marking two decades of Urban Hymns.

We've been hearing from Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth who has announced a new solo album. It's called Electroc Trim and it'll be released on September the 15th on Mute records. He's already shared the new single, “Circular (Right as Rain).”
Ranaldo’s last solo record, Last Night on Earth, was released in 2013. Of the nine tracks on this new album six of them feature vocals by Sharon Van Etten (who’s also in the new video for Circular (Right As Rain)). The album also features contributions by Nels Cline of Wilco and Ranaldo collaborated with the New York-based author Jonathan Lethem on lyrics on six of the songs. He told me more about it for BBC 6 Music News... YAHOOO! This week on my Virgin Radio Music Discovery show I had the brilliant London four-piece Zola Blood in session.
They performed three tracks from their debut album Infinite Games and we chatted about doing it DIY, why that title, how they came to be Zola Blood and how it might not have been the best idea to paint the studio yellow. Listen back below: Nick Mulvey is baaaack, following up his great debut album First Mind with Wake Up Now, out in September.
He dropped by Virgin HQ to chat to me about the new record, fatherhood and hanging out with Brian Eno. Plus he did the honours of performing Unconditional and Myela live. Listen back to that below: The amazing Aldous Harding came in to chat and play some tracks off her second album Party. Listen back to the three tracks recorded for Music Discovery below:
