I had the pleasure of speaking the very talented British rising jazz star Emma Jean Thackray ahead of her performance on the main stage of We Out Here festival this summer. For an interview on air on BBC Radio 6 Music we spoke about her recent album, the scene and her memories of the pre-pandemic first edition of Gilles Peterson/Worldwide/Brownswood's UK festival offering. Listen below: 9/30/2021 0 Comments BICEP BBC 6 MUSIC INTERVIEWWe did Bass Day on BBC Radio 6 Music over the August bank holiday and the same weekend electronic duo Bicep headlined Field Day/All Points East in East London's Victoria Park. I took the opportunity to speak to the guys Andy and Matt about their return to festivals and how drum and bass and jungle influenced their sound. Listen back below: Former frontman of The Maccabees Orlando Weeks is back with his second solo album since the band split. Hop Up will be out in January 2022 and so far he's shared three tracks from it. I spoke to him for BBC Radio 6 Music news in between Big Skies Silly Faces and Deep Down Way Out to find out more about the tracks, the album, working with producer Bullion and getting sun burnt in England while doing some expert trampolining for a new music video. Have a listen to our chat... On my latest run on Music News on BBC Radio 6 Music I had the pleasure of speaking with singer-songwriter José González about his recently release album Local Valley, his first studio album in more than six years. We spoke about being slow, the making of the album, fatherhood and how he computes the bonkers numbers of streams he's amassed with his music. Listen to our conversation here:
This month's Music Discovery show was a little EXTRA if I may say so myself. Not only was it the first time I had guests live in the studio again but I had not one but two. I welcomed Rhian from Wet Leg, the world's hottest new band whose debut single Chaise Longue has been POPPING OFF and Joel Culpepper, an insanely amazing vocalist and song-writer who releases his debut studio album Sgt Culpepper at the end of this month.
Listen back to the programme on Soho Radio and watch the interviews with Rhian and Joel below... Martha Wainwright is back with a new track, the lead track of her first studio album in five years Love Will Be Reborn. The record comes out on August 20th. It’s her first since 2016’s Goodnight City but the first since 2012’s Come Home To Mama to feature so much original material. It came off the back of a difficult time for her personally and was made in Martha’s hometown of Montreal, where she was when I spoke to her, in bed with her morning coffee on a glorious sunny morning! Here - in the piece for BBC Radio 6 Music we speak about writing her most personal work to date…
For my latest Music Discovery monthly programme on Soho Radio my feature guests were Buckinghamshire electronic duo Jacana People. For a fairly new project started little over a year ago and that launched just as a global pandemic started, they've had a lot of buzz. And quite rightly. For fans of Four Tet, Bonobo and the like, this ought to be right up your strasse. I spoke to Rob and Aaron about their latest single Second Story Sunlight, a title which was inspired by an Edward Hopper painting, their process, how it's all been so far as well as what they have in store with future projects. Watch the interview on my You Tube channel or listen back to the radio show below...
For my latest Music Discovery show on Soho Radio London I had the brilliant Falle Nioke as my guest. He recently released a brand new Marasi EP with Sir Was on Prah Recordings. We talk all about that, working with Ghost Culture, new collaborations, inspiration and his travels in West Africa that set him on a path of music to where he now resides in Margate.
My guest this month on my Music Discovery monthly show on Soho Radio is the wondrous composer, singer and presenter Hannah Peel.
In this feature interview we hear tracks from her recent album Fir Wave, about its interesting back story, her soundtrack work for Game of Thrones and the many projects she's been working on during the pandemic lockdowns. The rest of the show features new music from the likes of Mdou Moctar, Toada, Hiatus Kaiyote, Yarni, Jayda G, Penya, Sofia Kourtesis and more. |
